our region experiment

Postby Joan Friesen » Tue Aug 11, 2015 2:49 pm

As a part of adapting this curriculum, after having small group conversations between our Region Board members, we challenged each of our 20 members to worship in another region church--one that is culturally different from them--before our next meeting in November. We have a great enough diversity of churches and times of worship, that this challenge is possible for every Board member to meet it. We will be sharing our experiences and learnings as a part of our next meeting.

We in ABC of Greater Indianapolis plan to use this experiment among Board members as a part of two 2016 region-wide gatherings that will also have people using worship as a way to learn about another's culture or race.

In November our Board members shared their experiences in cross-cultural worship. One pastor took two members of his church to worship with one of our two Karen congregations, including a newly baptized teen and the pastors of the Spanish-speaking church that meets in their building. This young teen was immediately asked to participate in the worship service and it was his excitement over being included that was the joy of the day. We're still encouraging board members, pastors, and church leaders to join in this experiment and to share their stories.
